DAY 7B
DAY 7 –
WHO DO I THINK I AM, ANYWAY?
I was attending an inner-city public worship service in a rough neighborhood that had recently experienced a rash of murders, overdoses, and suicides. Finding a parking spot, a block away, I saw an overflowing garbage pail and thought, “This must be pretty commonplace.” After walking past it, the Holy Spirit challenged me to go back and clean it up. My immediate thoughts were, “I’m not here for that. It’s disgusting, and I don’t have either gloves or the tools.” These self-serving reflections were followed by God asking me, “So, you’re here to help this broken community, and yet what I’m asking you to do is beneath you?” I then thought of the verse, “What did you come out in the wilderness to see?” I turned around, got dirty, and picked it all up. Who do I think I am, anyway?
